I never thought I would find myself in a situation like this. It was the first time I had ever experienced such a serious accident. Initially, I only wanted to visit my friend’s boarding house, but I never expected that everything would happen so quickly, in just a matter of seconds.
That night, I felt extremely restless in my room. The walls that usually felt comforting suddenly felt tight and suffocating. I wanted to find a calmer atmosphere to refresh my mind. At that time, my head was filled with so many thoughts, and assignments were piling up, yet I had no motivation to work on them. It felt like I was exhausted from the same routine every day but didn’t know how to break free from that feeling.
I remembered that I had a friend from high school who was also studying in Surabaya. So, I decided to contact her, hoping we could meet up and talk for a while. Maybe we would just sit somewhere, buy some snacks, and share stories to lighten the burden I was carrying in my mind. I hoped that stepping outside for a while and hearing a friend’s laughter would calm me down, even if only for a moment. But I never imagined that this simple intention to clear my mind would lead me to an incident that would change so many things in my life.
I left around 7 PM that evening. The streets weren’t too crowded, but I kept getting stuck at red lights, which made me a bit frustrated because it slowed down my journey. I just wanted to arrive quickly so I could finally clear my mind.
To make it even more confusing, I couldn’t quite remember where my friend’s boarding house was located. The last time I visited her, she had just moved to a new place, and I hadn’t been there often enough to remember exactly which street it was on. Because of that, I rode my motorcycle slowly, scanning the area while trying to look for any familiar landmarks that could guide me.
I positioned myself toward the middle of the lane, preparing to turn right since, as far as I could remember, her place was on the right side of the road. I was focused, yet my mind was also occupied with thoughts about school, the assignments I hadn’t finished, and the relief I hoped to feel after meeting my friend. At that moment, I never thought that something so ordinary—riding to visit a friend—would take such a sharp turn in just a matter of seconds, changing the course of my night and leaving a mark I would remember for a long time.
But it turned out that my friend was actually on the left side of the road, even though I had already turned right. I was surprised when I suddenly heard her calling my name from across the street.
Because of that, I quickly prepared to make a U-turn so I could go back and reach her. Of course, before turning, I had already checked the road to see if any vehicles were coming. I tried to be careful, making sure the road was clear before I moved.
I began to turn around, but in just a split second, a motorcycle came speeding toward me and crashed into me. The impact was so sudden that I didn’t even have time to process what was happening. Everything turned into chaos, and soon, the road was filled with honking and a traffic jam started to form around us. At that moment, I felt a mix of shock and fear, realizing that a simple plan to meet a friend had turned into a serious accident in just a blink of an eye.
I honestly don’t even know whose fault it was. At that moment, it didn’t really matter to me. What mattered most was that, thankfully, I was okay. I only had a few wounds on my leg and some internal bruises, but I was still alive, and that was enough. It’s strange to think that a simple plan to hang out with a friend ended up like this. What was supposed to be a calm night to refresh my mind turned into a night I would never forget. My motorcycle was badly damaged, especially on the right side, which was completely destroyed and barely recognizable. At first, I thought the accident wasn’t that serious, but it turned out to be quite severe, actually. Hehe.
But it’s okay. I didn’t need to be hospitalized, and that was already a relief. My relative took care of me while I recovered at home until I was well enough to return to campus and attend classes like usual. And yes, this was definitely an unexpected condition in my life. I had never been in an accident like this before, never been hit so hard on the road, and it truly left me with an experience I will carry with me for a long time.
